July 14th, 2007 under Inspiration. [ Comments: 3 ]

Jessica Osborne, a waitress at Pizza Hut, has a dream to go college and pursue a career in photography. But with the lack of money, she can not do so.

But one Friday evening, her dream did come true. Her regular customer Becky, who orders the same pizza every Friday, gave Jessica a $10,000 tip to help pursue her college education.  Becky had recently received a huge settlement from an accident that took the lives of her oldest daughter and husband. Becky gave Jessica a $10,000 tip to help pursue her career and thought it was the right thing to do.

What Web Entrepreneurs can learn from Shia LaBeouf
July 9th, 2007 under Ramblings, Inspiration. [ Comments: none ]

I recently watched the new summer movie, “Transformers“ and thought it was one of the best movie I’ve seen in a while. I loved it so much that I actually went to the theatre and saw the movie twice. So now I figured that if the loved the movie so much I might as well blog about. So I did a little research and found something inspirational about the main actor Shia LaBeouf from the movie.

Shia LaBeouf from the new Transformers Movie

Shia LaBeouf, one of Hollywood’s young rising star, grew up with a rough childhood life. His dad’s resume included Vietnam war veteran, drug dealer, radio clown and a rehab patient while his mom was a bead vendor on the street. Growing up in a poor broken family made Shia a stronger kid and made himself realize he did not want to fall in the same trap as his parents did.

With his recent Hollywood success, Shia is still that down to earth guy who is still driving his Camry and living in his old apartment. You will not see him at any Hollywood party scenes but instead rather concentrate more on his acting career.

As web entrepreneurs, we can learn a lot from Shia. We shouldn’t let any obstacles get out way from doing what we love to do. We should just jump over those obstacles (failures) and keep moving forward. Don’t let any distractions get in our way by keeping focus on our tasks. Take each day one step at a time and don’t waste a second of it!

Making money online with a 13 year old
June 29th, 2007 under Inspiration. [ Comments: 1 ]

At the age of only 14 (just turned 14 two weeks ago), Carl Ocab has matured into a little entrepreneur by making his money online. Like-father-like-son, Carl Ocab followed his dad’s footstep by becoming a web entrepreneur making his income online.

Like every other blog start-ups, most of them will fail within the first year even with young Carl’s blog, CarlOcab.com. Carl originally started his blog to ramble about tech related news but really never succeeded. After a few more failures, Carl finally found his niche and a topic to blog about.

Carl Ocab

His blog is now blogging about “Making money online with a 13 year old”, a blog that is becoming increasingly popular on the web. CarlOcab.com, is currently ranked on the first page on Google when you use the term “make money online”.

After visiting his blog and reading on some tips, I knew I had to write about him so others will be inspired as I am. I managed to catch up with Carl aka “Kidblogger” to have a quick chat with him online. Note that Carl lives in the Philippines (different time zone), so I had to stay up til 4 in the morning to chat with him.

How I made $1000 in Five Days
June 28th, 2007 under Business, Inspiration. [ Comments: none ]

What is the secret ingredient to make $1000 in five days? Well, there is no secret! One of the main ingredients in making $1000 in less than a week was “TRAFFIC”. How did I managed to get huge amount of traffic to my site in five days? Well there were the local newspapers, local news media (CHBC), then nationwide news media (Global and CNN) and to top it off, making front page of Digg.

With the amount of traffic that came to the site, onedollarplaystation3.com, most people would have thought all the ad revenue was earned through Google Adsense. Well they were wrong! If I was to count my eggs in one basket, I would have only earned $212.62 through Adsense in those 5 days. Instead, I diversified my earnings by adding another ad on the site. The other ad was an affiliate link through eBay.  When someone clicked on the affiliate link, and bought something off eBay, I received up to 75% of eBay’s commission.  Through the five days, eBay have brought me in over $700 in commissions. Other than the PS3 site, all my other sites are bringing more money in affiliate commissions than Google Adsense alone. If your site is only making revenue from Google Adsense, then you should add other ads to maximize your site earnings. If you would like to be an eBay affiliates, you can sign up at CJ.

My Adsense Earnings

Building Onedollarplaystation.com site was a great learning process for me. I like sharing my experience with it and use it as a learning example for others.

Looking back on the site, there were things I should have done:

  1. I should have set up the site as a blog. This was probably the biggest mistake I’ve made. Setting it up as a blog would have allowed me to update the content daily and therefore keeping visitors coming back for more. If I would have set up the site this way, the site’s earnings would have doubled and still be active today. I could have held more PS3 contest and kept bringing in new visitors daily.
  2. Adding a text link ad. By adding a text link ad such as Kontera and Text-link-ads, it would added a few more hundred dollars to the profit.
  3. I should have started earlier. The would built and launched it two days. I should have going to the press beginning of December instead mid-December.

Raising $1000 from Onedollarplaystation3.com for Charity was an awesome learning experience for me. By taking what I learnt from the experience and apply it to my own projects, I am now on my way to meet my goals.

Who Wants to be the next internet millionaire?
June 26th, 2007 under Business, Ramblings, Inspiration. [ Comments: none ]

Can we make millions just from working on the internet? A lot of people in this world don’t think so.

Joel Comm, one of the world’s foremost experts on the subject of making money on the internet, and his crew of successful internet gurus are part of an interesting internet reality show, “Who Wants To An Internet Millionaire“.  The idea of the show is to take twelve contestants and make them learn everything they need to know from the world’s top internet gurus to become Internet Millionaires . Contestants will be competing for $25,000 in cash and the opportunity to participate in a joint venture with Joel Comm. Wow this has to be a win-win situation. If you lose, you come home with the knowledge and if you win, you get to be partners with Joel Comm in an ultimate venture.

I wish I found out about the reality show earlier because I would love to be taught and trained to make money on the internet by today’s top internet gurus.

The show will be exciting to watch and I’ll be looking forward to catch the premier.

Plentyfish.com in the News Again
June 22nd, 2007 under Inspiration. [ Comments: 5 ]

Remember our old pal, Markus Frind? The man who runs a free online dating site Plentyoffish.com that’s making $20,000+/day off adsense. Well, he made it on the news again with MSNBC.

Markus is making millions from his site and receives millions of pageviews/day. PlentyofFish has become one the largest dating site on the internet and currently ranking number one in the UK and Canada and number three in the United States.

What surprises me the most in the video is when he told the reporter that he only spends an hour a day managing the website. He makes $20,000/day from the site and only has to spend 1 hour/day working on it? This has to be a job everyone is dreaming of!

An Inspiration Story: Dreams do come true
June 22nd, 2007 under Inspiration. [ Comments: none ]

I recently came across the web with the most inspirational story that I’ve heard of. It’s a story about Paul Potts, a 36 years old cellphone salesman who had a dream to be an Opera Singer.  His dream was thought to be unreachable due to his illness, debt problems and his lack of confidence. Paul, described as not the best looking guy, lost his self confidence when being bullied in his school years.

Paul with his lack of confidence, almost made him not to send his audition tape to Britain’s version of “America’s Got Talent”. But that little courage came out and he managed to send it in and now he is the winner of the show. He is now $100, 000 richer, signed a million dollar recording contract with Simon Cowell’s record company, Watch the video and you will be inspired how the underdog won the whole competition.

The Kid Who Turned Down One Billion Dollar
June 16th, 2007 under Inspiration. [ Comments: none ]

Mark Zuckerberg, 23, a Harvard drop-out and CEO of FaceBook, recently turned down a one billion dollar offer from Yahoo to buy FaceBook. We were all shocked to see a 23 year old to refuse an offer for that amount of money. In the recent release of FastCompany Magazine, Mark stated that he is playing a different kind of game. He’s here to build something for the long term.  You can watch the video on Mark for his plans on FaceBook’s future below.

I, myself, don’t have a FaceBook account but my brother and sister who do, are addicted to it. Every time they go on the computer, the first site they visit is FaceBook. My siblings are not a huge internet social network fan, but after seeing them opening up an account (with millions of others) , I can see why the site is worth one billion dollar.

Blogging for a Living in the Third World Country
June 13th, 2007 under Inspiration. [ Comments: none ]

Quitting your full-time job to blog full for a living is everyone’s dream. Amit Agarwal quit his full-time job at a software company to become the first professional blogger in India. For most of us, that can be the riskiest move, but Amit took the chance and now is earning over $7,000US  off Adsense alone(from an old source).  He is now earning a lot more money than he would from his old job and is now enjoying the freedom by blogging from the comfort of his home.

Amit’s blog, Digital Inspiration, blogs on computers, software, consumer technology and internet. He also blog on tips on how to make money from blogging. Amit Agarwal has appeared on TV and radio channels including BBC, CNN IBN, CNBC, NDTV and Blog TV Singapore.

Making $7000/month income may not seem a rich life in Canada or the US, but in the third world country like India (where tax law does not exist and where most people make $1/day) making that amount of money can make you live like a king.
